Dave Marsay works for Waters Waste Services as a Head Driver & Driver Trainer and combines his work commitments with spending time with his family – wife Gemma and 4 year old son, Alfie. Dave joined The Waters Group 20 years ago in 1997 when there was only 2 other employees working for what was Petch Waters at the time.
My role at Waters… I am a Artic (Articulated) Vacuum Tanker Driver / Operator and recently become a Driver Trainer for the company.
How my role has changed over the years… It has changed in many ways, when I started in 97 there was only two other lads working for Petch Waters. I started off on a Transit with a pump on the back, moved onto a 7.5T vehicle, then did a couple of years on a flatbed doing general haulage delivering up to Scotland. Since 2004 I have moved from an 18T vacuum tanker, to a 26T, then to a 32T and ended up with a 44T artic vacuum tanker.
A typical day for me is… How do I describe a typical day?! The work is so varied. It used to be more routine when I was on the smaller tankers but now I can be on a tanker to training one of the new lads up on how to use the pump correctly. There is no such thing as a typical day in my job.
My greatest achievement at Waters… I have achieved many things in 20 years of being here, but my most recent achievement of becoming a driver trainer within the company is my favourite.
What I enjoy most about my job is… The variety! I enjoy watching places grow and observing the transformation, it could be wasteland then within months, hundreds of houses have been built or a power plant has gone up in no time. Also the people, both the people I work with and the people I meet whilst I’m doing my job.
The advice I would give to people wanting to get into a similar role is… Be flexible, if you want to move up the ladder and progress in a company – be flexible and open to learning new things and always be professional.
I was inspired by… My brother (Andrew) got me into driving and working on farms. Once I got a taste for it, my best friend at the time was working here and got me a trial, and the rest is history as they say.
Three words to describe Waters… Honest, Helpful & Varied
How my managers have supported me in my career… I have always wanted to progress and move up in my career. I have moved up the vehicles and now I am a driver trainer. Waters have put my through all my licences and CPC training, but also helped me through difficult periods in my life which is important.
